You are going to be shocked when you realize how many modern songs the Brass Bands do covers of. If you are from the United States, Oompah music will sound just like Polka to you as American Polka has more of a German influence than Polka from Europe does. Traditional Polka comes from Czech and Poland and relies more on the accordion while German Oompah has more of a brass band ( Blaskapelle) feel. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.Germans will tell you NO as the music is German Oompah and definitely not Polka. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. “Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. She has some kind of maverick, and since "this" is Vienna, he's leaving, while trying to keep a straight face. Obviously, stereotypes are generally wrong and cannot possibly be true for all people, of course. People in Vienna Austria have a stereotype for being cold, aloof, and impolite. He's not talking about reaching him via phone- he means emotionally.Ī "maverick" is someone who doesn't use traditional methods they're rebellious, they're independent and unconventional. I think he's questioning himself and his barriers. He repeatedly questions to himself: "Am I *really* gone?" And "Is there really NO way to reach me?". When he gets on the train, there goes the down pour"- he cries after he gets on the train. She has no idea, and this one way train means he's not coming back for quite awhile. But did this person do it to hi, or someone else? He doesn't say, but for some reason needs to leave.Īnd I don't think he's telling her that he's ending it. IMO, I think he's been hurt and he has built emotional walls around him. "This is my game face"- he's trying to hide his real feelings for some reason which he doesn't get into at all. "But this is the distance"- again, either emotional or physical. Honesty and fear are playing a role in this relationship. Maybe in 5-10 years they might be able sort things out. Whether this occurred in Vienna or not, distance is an issue- physical distance or emotional distance. I think he means emotionally, because he can't handle it. "There's really no way to reach me, 'cuz I'm already gone". He's breaking up with her, but he doesn't want to. If you read this meaning and then look up "Vienna" you wont find much of a definition more than that of it being a City in Austria. The hell they live is not a maverick, it's simply, Vienna. Saying, the rest of the world may have it's fancies and riches and freedoms, but this is just Vienna. Maverick means indepence, doing what you will when you will. Maybe in five or ten years this will be straightened out and honesty need not be feared as a friend or an enemy - truth hurts, but it builds strong lasting solid relationships.Īnd lastly, "so this is your maverick. The bridge "Maybe in five or ten." seems like a plee to end the war. The entire second verse makes me think of the prisoner's screaming from help from foreign countries to come in and save them from the situation. There was absolutely no way to contact anyone inside the camps, and no contact going out either.īy the time the liberators got there, a lot of people had already died. Men from women, familys from familys, people from themselves. When the prisoners were being brought to camps, it was for many, a one-way ticket train. "The day's last one-way ticket train pulls in." "Vienna, Austria" is an area where a portion of the Holocaust happened. Has anyone ever related this to WW2 and/or the Holocaust?
